Bridget Jones' Diary, by British writer Helen Fielding, was published in 1998, sold more than a million copies in the United States and inspired a hit film. The book also changed the publishing industry. Readers suddenly clamored for books that resembled Bridget Jones' Diary in their focus on a single woman in her twenties or thirties, living in London or New York, and negotiating the territory of friends, family, work and (especially) love with self-deprecating humor. Writers and publishers responded with a veritable avalanche of titles. This genre has been termed "Chick Lit." Here are some authors to try:
