For the members of T.O.T.A.L. to reach out and promote literacy and library services among the teen population of the Nashville community.

All About T.O.T.A.L.

T.O.T.A.L. is a program made possible through funding by Bank of America to promote literacy among teens on behalf of the public library.

We educate teens on the services and resources the library has to offer, and do our best to bring new users to the library. The members of T.O.T.A.L. (all of whom are teens) research, plan and implement programs that are of interest to teenagers living in the Nashville area.

The T.O.T.A.L Program has a wide variety of programs to offer teens and young people.
Here are a few of the programs T.O.T.A.L has to offer:

  • Game Night: T.O.T.A.L, as well as the library hosting the event, provides teens with board games, cards, charades, etc. to have fun and relax. Refreshments are also provided to the youth.
  • Spoken Word: This program gives the youth at the participating library branch an opportunity to show off their literary skills by presenting poetry, rap, monologues, etc. (like an open mic night). Refreshments are provided.
  • Tackling the Issues: These are special programs where specific issues such as bullying, racism, and online safety are discussed. These forums provide a safe and open venue where teens can be informed and learn important tips that will help them in today’s society

Teen Volunteers

Teen volunteers have played a significant role in the success of T.O.T.A.L. Volunteers can make a significant contribution by promoting literacy throughout the community. While participating, volunteers will gain individual knowledge and skills so that they will be able to assist and/or oversee many of the T.O.T.A.L programs. Additionally, volunteers may receive great references as a result of their dedication and community involvement. If you would like to share in this wonderful opportunity by volunteering, please contact Monica McLaurine at monica.mclaurine @ nashville.gov.
