Nashville Public Library is saying “later” to overdue fines, making our books and other materials even more accessible to everyone. Beginning July 5, 2017, we will no longer charge overdue (late) fines for items returned past the due date. NPL will still charge for replacement fees for lost or damaged items, as well as fees associated with collecting replacement costs through a collection agency.
Why is NPL eliminating overdue fines?
This change makes our collections even more accessible to all library patrons.
When does this go into effect?
July 5, 2017. We will wipe out all existing overdue fines in your account during July 2 - 5, when we switch to a new library automation system.
Does the elimination of late fines also apply to larger, non-traditional physical items, like ukulele kits and Launchpads?
Yes. However, lost or damaged fees will apply.
Do old fines carry over?
No, old overdue fines will not carry over to the new system. However, charges for lost or missing items or collection agency fees will carry over. You may still return items to have replacement charges removed.
I just paid off my late fines. Do I get a refund?
No. We thank you for your responsible use of NPL materials. This new policy to eliminate overdue fines takes effect July 5, but we will not refund previously paid overdue fines.
What will happen to events previously tied to “fine amnesty,” such as Food for Fines, Summer Challenge, and Teen Read Week?
We will continue to partner with Second Harvest in other meaningful ways to collect food donations. We offer other prizes and drawings as incentives for Summer Challenge to keep children and teens reading over the summer months. Through Limitless Libraries, our partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), NPL offers Teen Read Week as a way for teens to “read off” their fines. Teen Read Week also offers amnesty for replacement costs for lost or missing items, and that will not change.
Aside from late fines, are any other fees changing (e.g., replacement costs, collection agency fees)?
Replacement costs and collection agency fees will remain the same. Only overdue fines are being eliminated.
