Guy Clark (1941 - 2016)

May 19, 2016

Texas transplant, song-writer supreme Guy Clark died May 17 at age 74. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2004.

Clark's works had been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Jimmy Buffett, and Brad Paisley. Fellow Texans Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and even that odd Oklahomian, Verlon Thompson, have performed beside the deep baritone Guy Clark.

Clark penned some of the best songs of country music, including "Desperados Waiting for a Train", "Homegrown Tomatoes" and "Heartbroke." His 1975 album Old No. 1 could be found on the turntable or under the couch of every dang communal living home through the 70’s. I dare you to argue this point. If you came of age in the 70s and you got your granola from the local co-op, the soundtrack of your life included Guy Clark songs.

Guy Clark was an Artist in Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2006. Accolades in the past decade include the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, My Favorite Picture of You. He recorded Songs and Stories at the Belcourt Theatre in 2011. This one’s for him: a tribute to Guy Clark includes loving renditions of his tunes by the best of the best of Americana voices.

My favorite picture of you

Is the one where you’re staring

Straight into the lens

It's just a polaroid shot

Someone took on the spot

No beginning no end
