Buffy The Vampire Slayer: an Update

December 13, 2018

“In every generation there is a chosen one…”

She’s back.
That’s right. Rumors have been circulating for a while now that 20th Century Fox is planning to reboot the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show. Now before you freak out, know that Joss Whedon is attached as executive producer. I’ll admit that there’s still part of me that thinks Fox is going to screw this up somehow (#Firefly) but I am curious to see what they do with it. It sounds like things are still in the very beginning stages and no one has seen any kind of script yet.
Which is good, because that means you have plenty of time to catch up on all the Buffyverse comics before the reboot kicks into high gear. You’ve probably got some holiday vacation coming up, right? Why not binge on some Buffy?
Dark Horse Comics started releasing comic after the end of the original TV’s seventh, and final season. Since 2008, they’ve released Seasons Eight through the upcoming Twelve (which will be released on Christmas Eve). Season Twelve will be the last Buffy comics at Dark Horse, because as part of the deal of Disney purchasing Fox, they’ve pulled the license. We may be lucky enough to get more Buffy comics through Marvel – which is owned by Disney. Right now, though, we’ll just have to wait and see. The library has up through the first half of Season 11, and I had decent success getting the back half through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
We also have a short run series called Buffy: the High School Years.  This is also executive produced by Joss Whedon. I haven’t had a chance to read these yet, but they are sitting on my desk as I write this.
If you love Giles, you are in luck. For Season 11, he got his own book, Girl Blue. You’ll have to ILL this one, but again it was pretty easy to get. Our young Giles is having typical high school issues – crushes on undead vampire girls, weird brain sucking demons that he unknowingly created – you know, the usual.
Angel’s also getting in on the action with his own Season 11 series, post Faith team-up. I haven’t been the biggest fan of this run because there’s a lot of time travel with Illyria and Darla, but it’s canon, so I have to read it. This one is also ILL material.
Ok, wow. For being 20 years old, the Buffyverse sure is active. I know we’re all holding our breath that this new reboot won’t burn the franchise to the ground. At least Buffy is good at coming back from the dead.
Fingers crossed.
Happy slaying…
