"The Canterville Ghost" is a short story by Oscar Wilde.  It was the first of Wilde's stories to be published, appearing in two parts in The Court and Society Review in February and March of l887.

The story is about an American family who moves to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife's brothers. Unlike most ghost stories, especially the Victorian kind, the ghost that haunts the Canterville estate must be taken with a grain of salt and a large dose of humor, as we watch him being undone by some little upstart American boys and reduced to a mere shadow of his former ghostly self.  And a happy ending, to boot, another strange turn for any ghost story!
