July 11, 2025

Growing up, these movies weren't optional-you had to see them.

Depending on your age, you would get some grace. However, if you haven't seen them by now, you are out of excuses. Immediately place them at the top of your to-watch list. Check them out with your library card today!

The Wood

Roland, Mike, and Slim are best friends. On Roland’s wedding day, he is nowhere to be found. His ex-girlfriend, Tanya, calls Mike and Slim to advise them where Roland is.

While attempting to see if marriage is something Roland really wants, the movie flashes back to influential moments from his, Mike's, and Slim's teenage years.

Boyz n the Hood

Boyz n the Hood begins with an adolescent Tre Styles getting into a fight at school. His mother realizes at this point in Tre's life, he needs to live with his father, Furious.

After moving in with Furious, Tre reconnects with his childhood friends, Darrin, Ricky, and Chris.

The movie flashes forward to their teenage years, revealing that the environment you exist in has as much to do with your upbringing as your parents do.

Love & Basketball

Love & Basketball was the first introduction to many of my generation as to how complicated relationships can be.

The movie is broken into four "quarters", just like a basketball game, beginning with Quincy and Monica as children and how they became friends, how they grow together in high school, then college, and years after graduation.

While circumstances often separate Quincy and Monica, their love of basketball ensures their fates remain intertwined.
