Cinephiles, rejoice! Stream for free with your Nashville Public Library card

September 18, 2025

From Ferris Bueller to Ingrid Bergman, NPL has you covered.

Streaming movies and TV shows can get pricey. And mooching off your nephew’s girlfriend’s Netflix account isn’t a viable long term solution.

Good thing you have a free Nashville Public Library card (You don’t? Click here), because NPL’s video streaming services won’t cost you a dime.

Your library card gets you on multiple streaming platforms, including Kanopy, an award-winning video streaming service with 30,000 selections — all for free.

Whether you enjoy action movies, indie films, documentaries, world cinema, Criterion Collection classics, anime, or offbeat TV shows (or all of the above!), Kanopy offers something for everyone, from the casual viewer to the serious cinephile.

Here’s a sneak peek.

No matter what your preference, there’s a lot to explore. It only takes a few minutes to set up your free Kanopy account with your library card, and you can start streaming right away.

Here’s how it works.

Kanopy allocates 30 “tickets” to your library card at the start of each month (unused tickets don’t roll over). Each movie or show is labeled with a ticket value. Once you begin watching a movie or show, you have access to it for three days, and you can watch it as many times as you like during that time period.

Here’s how you sign up.

  • In our website menu, hover over Books and More, then select Kanopy from the Downloads & Streaming group.
  • Select the Access button, or download the app from links on the page.
  • Select Add a Library Card and enter your library card number and PIN.
  • You will then be prompted to set up your Kanopy account using your email address and a password (going forward, you will log in with email and password, not with your library card number).
  • Start streaming!

But wait, there's more!

NPL has a wide array of digital resources, providing access to children’s programming, magazines and newspapers, research materials, music streaming and music instruction, genealogy databases, historical records, and much more — all for free. Peruse NPL’s A-Z listing now and start streaming smarter today!
