I got married in 2013. I wasn’t like one of those starry-eyed girls who plans their whole wedding when they’re 7 and then just have to find the guy. But I was constantly on the look-out for the perfect song. You know, that one that you and your newly-minted husband dance to for your first official dance? I had CDs full of music of what I thought were perfect options. Songs that were not too sappy but fun and a little off beat.
And my husband nixed them all for a song on Top 40 radio.
On the first road trip we took to visit family we listened to a lot of the radio. The Lumineers smash hit “Ho Hey” was in heavy rotation and played every 45 minutes or so. We both liked it because the chorus refrain goes like this:
I belong to you
You belong to me
You’re my sweetheart
Sweet right? But I can’t tell you one other song from that album. I liked that song so much that I didn’t want to listen to anything else. When I found out that The Lumineers were putting out a new album I was a little skeptical. They couldn’t top the awesomeness that was “Ho Hey” could they?
I shouldn’t have been such a Doubting Thomas. The new album, Cleopatra, is really good and I like the whole album, not just one song. The first song, “Sleep on the Floor” starts off and kinda sounds like “Ho Hey” with the same stomping effect, but I think my favorite song is “Ophelia.”
I think The Lumineers are going to be my new Nickel Creek (who I desperately miss – sigh). They also have a touch of Paul Simon in their sound, which is just like icing on the cake. The library has their eponymous debut on Hoopla and has both albums on physical CDs. This is music you need to live in a little, but once you get comfy, you don’t want to leave (except maybe on a road trip to visit the family).
Happy Lumineering…
