So: this film has been compared to Black Swan, Mulholland Drive, and Ingmar Bergman's Persona. Pique your interest? Always Shine is a tale of female friendship/hateship that's infused with such a strong sense of dread that it’s almost a horror movie (helped along by the chilling sound design). Its two leads, Caitlin FitzGerald and Mackenzie Davis, do a scarily great job of showing the spiky, rivalrous chemistry between two aspiring actresses whose relationship unravels during a weekend getaway to Big Sur. Starting with a jarring set piece, the movie only gets better from there as twisty moments add up to an unnerving whole.
