Lil’ Readers Embrace Change with Read to Rise

May 27, 2020

Growing Families and Growing Vocabulary on the Menu in This Month’s Update

This story is the eighth part in a year-long series. Read the previous entry here.

As any devoted reader will tell you, one of the best things about books is how they help us grow. Literature allows us to explore new places, new people, and new concepts in a safe way that we can enjoy at our own pace.

And that’s exactly what our lil’ readers have been doing this month as they continue along with Read to Rise!

This month, Ray, Yurina, and Jin welcome their newest addition to the family, Hal. Both mommy and baby are doing well, and we’re very happy for these amazing folks as they welcome a new addition (and a future reader) to their growing family!

Meanwhile, Poppy, Goldie, and Virginia have been enjoying the nice weather, and some great books, as the girls continue to explore fun new words.

Ray (and Hal)

Number of Reading Days Logged: 266

Last Book Read: Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry

“Ray's interest in most things ebb and flow, but one constant has always been his love of cars!” said Jin, Ray’s father. “Scarry's book is a gift that keeps on giving. Every page is rich with things to discover and laugh about. Even I'll find something new with every read, and I'm finding Ray's passion rubbing off on me!”

Favorite Thing from Reading this Month: “Ray got a new baby brother on May 2nd! So, he's learning and practicing how to be a big brother from several books about brothers,” Jin said. “While he enjoys the stories, it seems like he's still in a bit of denial about his own, real-world situation.”

Poppy and Goldie

Number of Reading Days Logged: 194

Last Book Read: Poppy by Avi

Favorite Thing from Reading this Month:
“I’ve been looking for socially distant ways to enjoy the nice weather we’ve been having! We have enjoyed reading outside in the yard a few days this month. We are still enjoying chapter books. We read Poppy by Avi, and we started A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond. We also enjoyed learning all about blue jays from the book Two Blue Jays by Anne Rockwell on the story book trail at Warner Park,” said Virginia, Poppy and Goldie’s mother.

“Since we can't visit the library, we have been enjoying some favorites from our home collection, including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle. Goldie is just now learning to say words, and I can tell that she understands much more than she can say. I’m confident that seeing the colors and animals in the book will reap new vocabulary words very soon!” Virginia said.
