"Nashville's Magellan of the Air" Opening Exhibit Program

April 24, 2024

On Saturday, April 13th, Metro Archives hosted the opening program and reception for our latest exhibit: "Nashville's Magellan of the Air: 100th Anniversary of the First Flight to Circumnavigate the World."

Featuring Capt. Bob Henderson (USAF retired) and Ridley Wills II, the event offered an engaging hour-long discussion on the pioneering first aerial flight around the globe in 1924. They delved into the story of "Smiling Jack" Harding, a charismatic Nashvillian who played a pivotal role in the journey.

If you couldn't make it to the program, don't fret! You can catch the recording right here for your viewing pleasure. Plus, be sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming exhibit program highlighting the historic first aerial crossing of the Pacific Ocean during the same 1924 odyssey. Bob Henderson will return on Saturday, June 15th to continue recounting the remarkable journey. The program will once again take place at 2 p.m. in the Main Library Commons room.
