How Women Made Music

February 14, 2025

One day I was walking by the new book shelf and I always browse because you never know, right? And I happened to come across this delightful title. Since I’m a musician in my non-library life, it immediately caught my eye. I don’t really listen to NPR, so I had no idea that they had this Turning the Tables series specifically about women in music. This book contains essays and clips from this and other NPR programs and interviews. It’s a fun blend of short blurbs and longer essays. There is also some great artwork for the artists.

But wait...there's more?

As I was taking the book back to my office, my friend Crystal happened to see it and mentioned that NPL is going to have a program about this same subject, featuring many of the contributors to this work. Exciting, right? On Wednesday, March 5, NPL will host Women Made Music: An Evening with Industry Insiders featuring Ann Powers, Alice Randall, Jewly Hight, Adia Victoria, and Marissa Moss. Doors open at 5:30, with a 6:30 start time. This event is free, but tickets are necessary.

Listen-Along

It can be challenging to simply read a book about music, without hearing the art that inspired the prose in the first place. There are two great lists at the back of the book for the curious: The 150 Greatest Albums Made by Woman (as of 2017) and The 200 Greatest Songs by 21st-Century Women+ (as of 2018). My friend Crystal (from earlier) has created two playlists for you to browse:

If for some reason you can’t be there live because you maybe have to go be a woman in music (as an example), NPL is planning to record this event and will post it for all to see at a hopefully not-too-much-later date. Now you have no excuse. Read a great book, listen to some awesome tunes, and then swing by for an insightful evening full of great stories about musical women.

Happy women in music-ing…
