"The Haunters and the Haunted" Part II

Welcome back to All Things Eerie.    When we last met, our protagonist had secured for his curiosity a night in a house reputed by several sources to be haunted.  

By the point of our return to the story, his supposedly fearless manservant Fairburn has abandoned both him and the house, and his dog, a staunch breed known for its courage and pluck, has been reduced to a cowering and shivering bulk.  We shall now see how the night ends and what follows.
