My 2019 Favorite Picture Books [So Far]

July 16, 2019

It’s only July, but, in my opinion, it’s never too early to name some of your favorite books!

Take a look at these wonderful picture books that have been released so far this year. Are any of them your favorites, too? I’m looking forward to seeing what other books will be released in 2019!

Because by Mo Willems

A wonderful story about how people are inspired to create and pursue dreams through different series of circumstances.

Babymoon by Hayley Barrett

Every new parent/caregiver should read this. It gives new meaning to the term babymoon, which I love.

The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander

Never have I loved a book more. Kwame Alexander’s verse tied with Kadir Nelson’s illustrations are extraordinary. It’s hard to put into words why I love this book, but I feel it every time I experience it. And, that’s what it is, an experience.

The Piñata That the Farm Maiden Hung by Samantha Vamos

I love a good sequencing story. I especially love a good sequencing story when it introduces new vocabulary in a bilingual book. This story is told mostly in English, but the sequencing introduces key words in Spanish. Such a great way to introduce a new language!

Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour

Relocating is hard, especially in the midst of war and strife when you don’t have a friend. Lubna finds a pebble, which she deems her best friend, until a new boy named Amir comes along. Sometimes you need a friend, but sometimes they need it more.

The Sad Little Fact by Jonah Winter

A poignant, tongue-in-cheek book that explains why facts are important, for even the littlest reader. Adults will see the humor, too!

Up Up Up Down by Kimberly Gee

A great book of opposites that is highly relatable to all readers. Adults and children alike will find the daily routine of this family comical.

When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie L.B. Deenihan

Sometimes we don’t always get what we want, but the rewards we reap and are able to share are worth it.

The Very Impatient Caterpillar by Ross Burach

We all know patience is a virtue. Not this caterpillar though! He takes it to a new level that is sure to have your little one rolling on the floor in a fit of giggles.

Big Boys Cry by Jonty Howley

Explaining emotions to children and that it’s okay to feel them can be hard. Sometimes it can affect boys more, and this sweet story helps illustrate that crying (or, really, any feeling) is okay.
