Beachy Picture Books

July 15, 2025

Books have this magical quality that they can transport you anywhere in space and time. Children's books, in particular, have a way of captivating readers with their imagery and unique personalities. This summer, I am missing the ocean, so I've collected a few favorite beach-themed books for children. Read on to hear some of my favorite nautical reads from the past few years!

Abuelo, the Sea, and Me by Ismée Williams

This touching story follows a young girl and her Abuelo as they spend quiet days together by the sea in the Bronx. As they fish, explore, and share stories, their bond grows deeper. Over time, the girl carries the memories of those beach days with her, learning how love and connection live on even after your loved ones pass. The illustrations by Tatiana Gardel are absolutely stunning. I loved this heartfelt look at family, grief, and the vast comfort of the ocean.

Anemone is Not the Enemy by Anna McGregor

Anemone just wants a friend—but every time she gets close, she accidentally zaps someone with her sting! This clever under-the-sea story blends science and humor as it explores how tricky it can be to make connections. With bright oceanic illustrations and a sweet message, I adored this hilarious story of friendship and finding belonging.

Room for Everyone by Naaz Khan

Set in Zanzibar, this rhyming (and counting!) story follows Musa and his sister on their way to the beach—on a minibus that keeps stopping to let more people, their beach supplies, and even animals on! With colorful illustrations and a joyful rhythm, the book shows how there's always room to welcome others. There are lots of onomatopoeia sprinkled in that help bring the story to life. Finally, the bus comes to a stop and everyone piles onto the beautiful Nungwi Beach! Room for Everyone is a playful celebration of community, generosity, and sharing space.

If You Spot a Shell by Aimée Sicuro

This poetic picture book captures the essence of beachcombing and can really spark readers' imaginations. Told in a lyrical, second-person narration, the story invites us to join in a seashore walk full of wonder—where every shell, feather, or stone can become something more in the eyes of a child. Accompanied by soft, expressive watercolor illustrations, this book beautifully celebrates curiosity, creativity, and the quiet joys of nature. It was so lovely getting to take part in this daydream as I flipped through the pages dotted with shells, sand dollars, and other beach treasures!

Reading gives us worlds to explore, without having to go anywhere!

Whenever you're missing somewhere familiar or longing for new experiences, just pick up a picture book! It's free, it's safe, and you get to choose your own adventure. Thanks for coming along on my imaginary beach vacation. Until next time, friends! 🐬
