Staff Picks: Favorite Online Workouts
When we're not bench pressing books, library staff are sweating and stretching to many of these free, streaming classes.
For Adults and Teens
Yoga with Adriene
This is by far the most popular fitness channel across our team. NPL staffer Stephanie likes that Adriene "adapts her workouts for all levels of experience, and has several videos on loneliness, anxiety, and stress that might be very helpful during this time." “Adriene exudes warmth and humor and has a yoga video for every mood,” says another NPL staffer Heidi. Camp Gladiator “Hustle from Home”
Like other gyms, Camp Gladiator is taking their classes online through Facebook Live, and providing printable workouts. “I love them because pretty much everything can be modified and done with or without dumbbells,” (or maybe a can of beans?) reports NPL staffer Bethany. “The focus changes each week - endurance, strength & agility, interval and peak. Everything is currently free.”
NPL staffer Sade enjoys this curated list of yoga videos featuring popular teachers such as Jessamyn Stanley of Every Body Yoga and Faith Hunter.
“I love this series because it typically takes only 10 – 30 minutes, requires little to no equipment, and has options to do whole-body or target specific muscle groups,” recommends NPL staffer Ed. “The videos have a built-in rating scale based on your fitness level, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally doing a workout that’s beyond your current skill level.”
Featuring fitness instructors that teach from the confines of their living rooms, these relatable videos stream daily at 6pmCST on Facebook Live, and are later posted to their YouTube channel. NPL staffer Betsy says, “This is free to everyone - no membership required. Easy to do at home, lasts 30 minutes, and the videos are archived on their page if you miss one. The only equipment you'd need would be a chair (sometimes) for the triceps lifts.”
Access over 50 workouts with your library card on Hoopla, including yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, and more. “I borrowed from Hoopla some athletic yoga videos from Gaiam. They are no joke! Worked up a great sweat.” shares NPL staffer Klem. “And you can cast them to your Smart TV!”
You don’t need a membership to “find your favorite Y classes for all ages, wherever you are.” The YMCA compiled free, streaming videos of their popular classes such as barre, yoga, and bootcamp, while they are closed. There is a series of 5 beginner Tai Chi videos, each under 10 minutes, that I definitely will be giving a try.
Miss your weekly library yoga with Small World Yoga? They’re making daily classes available online with Facebook Live and featuring a rotating set of teachers. Check out the video below from one of our frequent gentle yoga teachers at Edmondson Pike Branch Library.
For the Little Ones
This channel is a go-to for people with children right now, like NPL staffer and mom Amber. “I really like Cosmic Kids Yoga for my little one. She tells stories through yoga poses and it is a fun way to get my preschooler moving.”
Featuring characters and songs that are played at many schools in the region, GoNoodle provides a free version for families that can be used on any device. NPL staffer Kayla likes that it gets the kids moving in a fun way.
