Every month, mental health experts will lead a discussion on a new facet of mental health. For the first six months, the focus is mental health for men.
Men of all experiences are suffering a mental health crisis.
In 2021, men committed suicide at 3.9x the rate of women, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; meanwhile, in the same year, 15% of men reported having no close friendships (up from 3% in 1990); and nearly all perpetrators of familicide are male, with nearly half of these instances ending in suicide.
Despite this, 40% of men report that they don’t discuss their mental health, either because they’re embarrassed (29%) or because there’s a “negative stigma” surrounding it (20%).
